The Urgent Need to End Taxation on Tips: A Call for Action

As a Congressional candidate for New Jersey’s 9th District, I am compelled to address a pressing issue that affects many hardworking individuals in our community: the taxation of tips. This policy undermines economic fairness and exacerbates financial hardships for a significant portion of our workforce, particularly women who rely heavily on tips as part of their income.

In our District, approximately 5% of women work in the food service and hospitality sectors, where tipping is a crucial component of their earnings. Many of these women earn less than $22,000 annually. For them, every dollar counts, and the taxation of their tips represents an additional and unwarranted burden. This policy further jeopardizes their financial stability in an era where inflation and rising living costs have already strained household budgets.

The impact of taxing tips extends beyond mere inconvenience. It affects the very livelihood of those who are often among the most vulnerable in our workforce. By removing the tax on tips, we can offer immediate relief to those who need it most, making a tangible difference in their daily lives. This change would alleviate financial strain and reflect a commitment to economic justice and fairness.

The time for action is now. I urged Vice President Kamala Harris and our lawmakers to prioritize the repeal of this tax and push for its swift passage. Collaborating with President Biden and Congress, they have the power to make this crucial change before the upcoming election, providing much-needed support to millions of Americans who depend on tips to sustain themselves and their families.

Ending the taxation on tips would be more than a policy adjustment; it would be a significant step towards restoring trust in our government’s ability to act in the best interests of its citizens. It’s about ensuring hardworking individuals are not penalized for their efforts and can keep more of what they earn.

Let’s work together to address this issue and deliver tangible benefits to those who need it most. The people of New Jersey’s 9th District and countless others across the nation are counting on us to make this change a reality.
